Fiber-Cement Siding for the Upper Story and Gables
On many Kingwood two-story houses the brick stops at the first floor. Above it, lap siding carries the weather, and when the old boards give out, fiber-cement is the common replacement.
Signs the Old Siding Is Done
- bottom edges swollen, soft or flaking, especially on shaded walls;
- paint that will not stay on the same boards year after year;
- boards cracked or punched in by limbs;
- gaps and rot at the corners, windows and where the roof meets the wall.
One or two bad boards is a repair. Rot across a whole wall, or boards that crumble when the neighbors are pried loose, points to replacing the wall or the whole upper story.

Old siding off, sheathing and framing checked, rot cut out.

Wrap and flash
House wrap, then flashing at windows, doors and the roof-to-wall line.

Planks and trim
Fiber-cement lap planks, corner and window trim, caulk and paint.
If a Roof Is Coming Too
Where a lower roof meets an upper-story wall, the roof flashing tucks behind the siding. Doing siding and roof in the same season, with the two contractors talking to each other, avoids tearing into new work twice.
