Three Decisions, in Order of Importance

Algae resistance. A shaded, slow-drying slope grows the dark streaks you see on older Kingwood roofs. Many shingle lines are made with algae-resistant granules; ask whether the one quoted is.
Impact rating. Some shingles are built to resist hail and falling debris. Under Texas Property Code §202.011, an association may not prohibit shingles designed to resist wind and hail if they resemble the allowed shingles, are more durable and of equal or better quality, and match the neighborhood.
Color. The one your village committee has to approve. Pick two you can live with, in case the first is turned down.

Care

Packed needles hold water against shingle edges. Twice a year is a reasonable rhythm under heavy canopy.

A limb that rests on or brushes the roof scrubs granules off in every wind.

The slope that never gets sun ages differently. Moss and algae hold moisture against the mat.

From the ground, with binoculars, before anything else. Missing tabs are visible from the yard.
