Siding Repair and Trim After a Limb or a Wet Year
A falling branch that clips the gutter often hits the upper wall too. And a shaded wall that never dries swells its boards from the bottom edge up.
Struck, or Soaked
Struck
A limb cracked or pushed in a few boards, dented a corner, split the fascia. Local damage, usually a local repair: matching boards, new trim, paint.
Soaked
Boards swollen and flaking along their bottom edges, worst on the side that stays in shade. The damage is spread out, and a few new boards will not stop it.
The Trim Exemption
In its May 23, 2024 storm release, the City of Houston listed replacing exterior wood fascia, trim and soffits that do not exceed an aggregate of 128 square feet among work that needs no permit. Most single-limb repairs sit inside that. A larger area, or siding boards rather than trim, is a question for the Permitting Center; confirm the current rule before work starts.
Matching matters here: a new board in a slightly different profile or sheen stands out on a street-facing gable, and your village committee may care about a color change.
Questions for the Contractor
- Can the existing profile be matched, or will a whole wall section be replaced to keep it even?
- What is behind the damaged boards: dry sheathing, or rot?
- Is the paint included, and to what edge?
- If the gutter and fascia were hit too, who handles the gutter?
